Headaches/Migraines

Migraines are severe headaches that can be devastating to an individual’s quality of life if they occur often.  They can exist with aura (nausea/vomiting), or without aura.  Over half of the patients that report having migraines suffer at least a 50% reduction in work or school productivity.  This causes a significant impact on patients that suffer from migraines.  In fact, the annual price tag of the cost of lost work and productivity is $13-17 billion.  Headaches in general are common in the United States, with well over 50% of adults having reported at least one headache a month.

The Cause

One of the headaches that is commonly seen in a chiropractic office are headaches caused by whiplash.  This is because 70 – 90% of whiplash patients suffer from headaches.  However, there are a multitude of other factors that can cause headaches.  Muscle tension, dehydration, exhaustion, inflammation, eye strain, allergies, blood pressure, blood sugar, and hormones can all contribute to headaches and migraines.

The Answer

The key to helping alleviate and avoid future episodes of migraines and headaches is to determine the cause.   Sometimes the answer can be as simple as drinking water to alleviate a headache caused by dehydration.  However, most headaches require more than water.  Chiropractic is used as a treatment option by many headache patients.  The reason that Chiropractic can be successful with migraines and headaches is because gentle manipulations of the spine are useful for stimulating the autonomic nervous system, reducing muscle tension, and reducing inflammation.  If you or someone you know is currently suffering from migraines and headaches, tell them that chiropractic may be able to help.
